It’s Almost NaNoWriMo!
Phew. Well, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? With NaNoWriMo starting tomorrow, I thought I’d check-in and give an update on Redzone. Sort of a proof-of-life kind of thing. First off, I’ve got an updated word count.
Word count: 24,729
Second, I’ve got some news. I’ve added a prologue.
I know what you’re saying, just through the power of the Internet. “New writers always add prologues. And it’s a mistake.” I’ve read some of these prologues that inspired this maxim which appears on every writing conference’s “Top 10 New Writer Mistakes” list. So, I get it. I’ve also read some prologues that break that rule. By that I mean to say, prologues that introduce characters and ideas that you’ll need later on (like mine). We’ll see if it’s a mistake. Or maybe I just need to relabel the prologue as “Chapter 1” to escape the sneers and jeering from the other new writers.
Just like that, yes.
Anyway, with NaNoWriMo here, I think I’ve found the motivation to get going again. My output over the summer has tanked and I’m starting to get to the point where I’d like this story out of the way so that I can work on other stories (I know it’s possible to write more than one thing at a time, but my brains work best on a single train of thought). My goal: a modest 20,000 more words by the end of November. Not a complete novel, but that should put me about halfway through Redzone.
No links this time. And unless anyone writes and says it would totally ruin their lives, I’m probably going to take down the pages I’ve posted to WattPad and Royal Road. I don’t care to try and keep up with the “community” aspect of those places…
